Belize To Require Visitors To Purchase COVID Travel Insurance

From February 15, all visitors to Belize will be required to apply for and purchase Belize Travel Health Insurance, a mandatory policy designed to help protect travelers from medical and non-medical expenses if they test positive for COVID-19 during their stay.

The policy costs $18 and provides coverage for up to $50,000 in medical expenses related to COVID-19 treatment for a period of 21 days.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses common in many different types of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats.

This insurance plan will appear online under the country’s public health regulations and provide coverage for accommodation expenses due to quarantine up to $2,000 (maximum $300/day).

Passengers will also be covered for emergency assistance services such as air evacuation and emergency expenses related to pre-existing conditions. Furthermore, it covers flight cancellations and expenses incurred by COVID-19 positive travelers for extended stays.

It is recommended that travelers purchase Belize travel health insurance prior to their travel to Belize; However, purchases can be made on arrival at Philip Goldson International Airport or at the Belize land border.

Visitors must purchase health insurance to travel in Belize and are required to complete a customs and immigration form which is provided on all flights to Belize.

Citizens of Belize, permanent residents, travelers with QRP or long-stay status, and flight crews are excluded from this mandatory insurance.

All international tourists must book accommodations at a Gold Standard property and submit confirmation at immigration.

In addition, all travelers, whether immunized or unvaccinated, entering Belize through Philip Goldson International Airport from other countries will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test.

If no testing is offered, COVID-19 testing will be conducted at the airport for a fee of $50 per passenger. Children under 5 years of age will not be required to submit a negative test.

In the past year, Belize has implemented several traveler protocols, including the Tourism Gold Standard program and the Travel Belize app, which enables travelers to plan their vacation seamlessly with approved hotels and tour operators (entry requirement).
